
Dead Man
Operates lever on fuel tank that allows fuel to flow through the hose into the race car as quickly as possible. Called the dead man because he can stop flow of fuel should there be any type of problem. Not considered part of the over-the-wall crew.
Inside Tire Changer and Helper
Changes inside front tire. Takes air gun and a tire over the wall. Removes front lug nut, proceeds to rear of car to remove lug nut (center lock wheel). Removes old tire, put new tire on and then tightens. During this process, his helper has put new tire on front and has taken old tire back over wall. After changer tightens rear tire, he moves to front to tighten lug and carry old tire over the wall. Must remove old tire and fits new tire in 8-10 seconds.
Outside Tire Changer and Helper

Fuel Man
Responsible for fitting nozzle into fuel tank opening on side of race car, and facilitating fueling as quickly as possible. No fuel can be dispensed until engine is turned off. Typically, fueling takes place first followed by tire changing. Wears helmet, Nomex underwear and full fire suit. The fuel being dispensed travels through a gravity based system and is not pressurized. |
